Terms and Conditions

The Short Version
Here's what actually matters, before the formal stuff.
You own your journal entries. We don't claim them, read them, or use them for anything.
Phone locking is voluntary. You install Unwritten and choose to enable Screen Time enforcement. You can remove it at any time.
Unwritten+ renews automatically. Your subscription renews unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the billing date. Cancel anytime in App Store settings.
AI Insights is opt-in. If you enable it, your entry text is sent to a cloud service. It is off by default. You must turn it on yourself.
This agreement is between you and us — not Apple. Apple has no obligation to support or maintain Unwritten.
1. Acceptance of These Terms
By downloading, installing, or using Unwritten, you agree to these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the app.
These Terms form a legally binding agreement between you and the developer of Unwritten ("we," "us," or "our"). They are not an agreement with Apple, Inc. Apple is not responsible for Unwritten or its content.
If you are under 13 years of age, you may not use Unwritten. If you are between 13 and 17, you confirm that a parent or guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf.
2. What Unwritten Does
Unwritten is a journaling app that uses Apple's Screen Time API to restrict access to apps on your device until you complete a daily writing session. When you write enough, your phone unlocks.
The app also includes:
A daily writing editor and local journal
Streak tracking and milestone celebrations
Optional AI Writing Insights (see Section 6)
Optional Unwritten+ subscription for premium features (see Section 7)
3. License to Use the App
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Unwritten on Apple-branded devices you own or control, subject to these Terms and Apple's Usage Rules.
You may not:
Copy, modify, or distribute the app or any part of it
Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code
Use the app for any unlawful purpose
Attempt to circumvent or disable the Screen Time enforcement mechanism in ways that violate Apple's developer guidelines
Use the app in a way that interferes with other users or our services
4. Your Journal Entries
You own your writing
Your journal entries belong to you. We do not claim any ownership interest in the content you write in Unwritten.
We do not read your journal entries. We do not sell them. We do not use them to train AI models or for any commercial purpose.
How your entries are stored
By default, your journal entries are stored locally on your device using on-device storage (MMKV). They are never uploaded to any server unless you explicitly enable AI Writing Insights (see Section 6).
If you delete the app, all locally stored entries are permanently removed from your device. We have no copy.
Limited operating license
To operate the app, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store and display your journal entries to you on your device. This license exists solely to run the app for you and extends no further.
5. Screen Time and Phone Locking
Unwritten uses Apple's FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, and DeviceActivity frameworks to apply app restrictions at your chosen schedule and remove them when you complete your writing session.
By enabling Screen Time enforcement in Unwritten, you acknowledge:
You are voluntarily choosing to restrict your own device access
The app uses opaque tokens provided by Apple — it never knows which specific apps are restricted or how you use them
All enforcement happens on your device through Apple's system frameworks
System updates, device configurations, or changes to Apple's APIs may affect how the locking feature works
We are not liable for any failure of the enforcement mechanism or for access that occurs despite restrictions being set
You can disable Screen Time enforcement at any time in the app's Settings or through your device's Settings app.
6. AI Writing Insights
Unwritten offers an optional AI Writing Insights feature that analyzes your completed journal entries to identify emotions, generate brief summaries, and extract topics.
This feature is off by default
You must explicitly enable AI Writing Insights in Settings. Before activation, we show you a clear disclosure explaining what data is transmitted. You can disable the feature at any time and your core experience — writing, phone locking, journaling, streaks — remains fully functional without it.
What happens when you enable it
When AI Writing Insights is enabled and you complete a writing session, your entry text is sent from your device to our server infrastructure via HTTPS and processed as follows:
Your entry text is received by our server function hosted on Supabase (AWS US East)
It is forwarded to OpenRouter, which routes the request to the AI model
Anthropic's Claude language model analyzes your text and returns a short result: 1–2 emotions, a brief summary, and 1–3 topics
The analysis is sent back to your device and stored locally
Your entry text is processed in memory — it is not permanently stored on any server
What you agree to by enabling AI Insights
By enabling AI Writing Insights, you authorize us to transmit the text of your completed journal entries to Supabase, OpenRouter, and Anthropic solely for the purpose of generating the analysis described above.
Your entry text is not used to train AI models. OpenRouter is configured with zero data retention for requests made through Unwritten. Anthropic's API usage policy prohibits training on API inputs by default.
You can withdraw this authorization at any time by toggling AI Writing Insights off in Settings. Disabling the feature stops all future transmissions immediately.
7. Unwritten+ Subscription
What's included
Unwritten+ is an optional paid subscription that unlocks premium features including AI Writing Insights, premium themes, and future Plus-only additions.

Prices are in US dollars and may vary by region. All payments are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not directly collect or store your payment information.
Auto-renewal
Unwritten+ subscriptions automatically renew. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period, your subscription will automatically renew at the same price and duration. Your Apple ID account will be charged within 24 hours before the renewal date.
Free trial
If you start a free trial and do not cancel before the trial ends, your subscription will begin and you will be charged. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when a subscription is purchased.
How to cancel
You can manage and cancel your Unwritten+ subscription at any time through your Apple ID account settings in the App Store. Removing the app does not automatically cancel your subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain access to Plus features until then.
Refunds
We do not issue refunds for partial subscription periods. For refund requests, contact Apple directly through Apple's standard refund process, as they process all transactions.
Price changes
If we change the subscription price, Apple will notify you before the change takes effect. Your continued subscription after the effective date constitutes your acceptance of the new price.
8. Analytics
We use PostHog to collect anonymous usage analytics such as which screens you visit, which features you use, and app lifecycle events. This data is never linked to your identity and never includes your writing content. We use it to understand how the app is used and to make improvements.

9. Prohibited Uses
You agree not to use Unwritten to:
Violate any applicable law or regulation
Infringe the intellectual property rights of others
Transmit harmful, offensive, or unlawful content through any part of the service
Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or infrastructure
Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the app or its services
Use automated means to access or interact with the app in ways not intended by its design
10. Intellectual Property
The Unwritten app, including its design, code, graphics, and all non-user content, is owned by us and protected by intellectual property law. These Terms do not grant you any rights to our intellectual property beyond the limited license in Section 3.
"Unwritten" and related marks are our trademarks. You may not use them without our written permission.
11. Disclaimer of Warranties
Unwritten is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
We do not warrant that:
The app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at any particular time
The Screen Time enforcement mechanism will function under all device configurations or iOS updates
AI Writing Insights will produce accurate, complete, or useful results
The app will be free of bugs, viruses, or other harmful components
Unwritten is a productivity and journaling tool. It is not a mental health service, therapy substitute, or substitute for professional medical or psychological care. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact a qualified healthcare professional.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, loss of goodwill, or any damages resulting from your inability to use the app or the failure of the Screen Time enforcement mechanism.
Our total liability to you for all claims arising from or related to Unwritten shall not exceed the greater of:
(a) the total amount you paid us in subscription fees in the twelve months before the claim arose, or
(b) fifty dollars ($50 USD).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of liability for certain types of damages. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the app, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.
14. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to Unwritten at any time, with or without notice, if you violate these Terms or if we discontinue the app. You may stop using Unwritten at any time by deleting it from your device.
Upon termination, the license granted in Section 3 ends. Sections 4, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 17 survive termination.
15. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will provide notice through an app update. Your continued use of Unwritten after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms.
16. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
Dispute resolution: If you have a dispute with us, please contact us first at privacy@getunwritten.app and give us 30 days to resolve it informally. If we cannot resolve it, either party may bring a claim in small claims court. EU and EEA users may also use the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.
If you are a consumer in the EU or EEA, you may also have the benefit of mandatory protections under the laws of your country of residence.
17. Additional Terms Required by Apple
The following provisions are required by Apple, Inc. as a condition of distributing Unwritten through the App Store.
a. Parties. This agreement is between you and the developer of Unwritten only. Apple, Inc. is not a party to this agreement and has no obligation to provide any maintenance, support, warranty, or other services with respect to Unwritten.
b. Scope of License. The license granted to you is limited to use on Apple-branded products you own or control, and as permitted by the Apple Media Services Terms of Service.
c. Maintenance and Support. We are solely responsible for any maintenance and support services for Unwritten. Apple has no obligation whatsoever to provide any such services.
d. Warranty. If Unwritten fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple may refund the purchase price (if any) you paid. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to Unwritten. Any other warranty claims are our responsibility alone.
e. Product Liability. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any product liability claims, consumer protection claims, privacy legislation claims, or similar claims arising from your use of Unwritten.
f. Intellectual Property. We, not Apple, are responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge of any third-party claim that Unwritten or your use of it infringes a third party's intellectual property rights.
g. Export Compliance. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo or designated as a "terrorist-supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
h. Third-Party Terms. You must comply with applicable third-party terms of service when using Unwritten (for example, your wireless carrier's terms of service).
i. Third-Party Beneficiary. Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. Upon your acceptance of these Terms, Apple will have the right to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
